About Us

We got our first Labrador in 1991, a yellow boy from a local breeder just starting out in the breed. Mike was a beautiful boy with a sweet temperment and incredibly smart. He passed at the age of 14 taking a piece of our hearts with him, but he left us with such a love for this wonderful breed that it was inevitable that there would be another Lab in our future.

When the time came to add a new puppy, we decided we wanted a chocolate lab and were referred to Corey Anger at Woodhull Labradors. Someone had just backed out of taking a chocolate boy so she had one available. Four weeks later, we drove to Long Island to pick up our new puppy, Jackson. It was love at first sight.

As luck would have it, Corey's sister took the other chocolate boy from that litter and she lived only 45 minutes away from us so she put us in touch with her sister Abby. A few weeks later, Corey and Abby invited me to join them at an AKC Sanctioned Match Show and urged me to bring Jackson - it would be fun! Abby's pup won the puppy class and Jackson won his sweepstakes class! I was immediately hooked -- our lives would never be the same.

When Jackson was 14 months old we went back to Corey and got George, another chocolate boy and a half brother to Jackson. He became "Woodhull's Brown to the Bone" after George Thorogood who sang "Bad to the Bone". He was a beautiful dark chocolate boy with the sweetest temperment and the goofiest personality. Everyone who met him loved him. He did very well in the show ring and was on his way to becoming an AKC and a CKC champion, but in December 2008 we lost him tragically. I was devastated by his passing - our sorrow was overwhelming. Corey was getting ready to breed Franky one last time when this happened and changed her plans to do a repeat breeding for us to have a full brother to George. He was named before he was born - Ben - after Ben E King who sang the song "Stand By Me" - the lyrics so hauntingly descriptive of what happened the night George died.  He joined our family in May 2009 - a sweet, gentle, playful, inquisitive, and yes, goofy black boy who wiggled his way into our hearts and helped filled a void that we thought could never be filled.

Clearances, dog shows and breedings to our boys - it was time to decide on a kennel name.  We chose the name Solstice Labradors in memory of George.  George was my heart dog, born on the summer solstice, passed on the winter solstice. Not a day goes by that I don't think of him. This past summer Ben sired his first litter -- one that never would have been but for losing George, and it was whelped on the summer solstice. It was like coming full circle.   We added Joe to our family in 2014 -- a grandson to Jackson -- truly coming full circle.

Please take some time to look at our website and meet our boys.

Life is good and Labs are the best!
